Vehicle Code § 21710– “Coasting” Downhill in Neutral  

Vehicle Code § 21710 states, “The driver of a motor vehicle when traveling on down grade upon any highway shall not coast with the gears of such vehicle in neutral.”


To avoid a conviction under Vehicle Code § 21710, a vehicle must be in neutral while the vehicle is proceeding downhill on a public roadway or highway.

A violation of Vehicle Code § 21710 is an infraction punishable by a fine of $238.

2. Your vehicle was not in neutral
3. You were driving on private property
