ATTEMPTED EXTORTION

PENAL CODE § 524

Under Penal Code § 524, makes it a crime to attempt to commit extortion, by means of threat

Extortion is the obtaining of property or other consideration from another, with his or her consent, or the obtaining of an official act of a public officer, induced by a wrongful use of force or fear, or under color of official right

“Consideration” means anything of value, including certain sexual conduct, or even an image of an intimate body part

POTENTIAL PUNISHMENTS FOR EXTORTION

Attempted extortion is punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for up to one year or in the state prison or by fine of up to $10,000, or by both such fine and imprisonment
